Project update - May 2023

31 May 2023

  • Co-design sessions kick off

Thirty people from across Ipswich came together on 27 May to form the Community Co-design Panel for the Reimagine Swanbank project.

The panel has been tasked with developing a draft masterplan for the future Swanbank Clean Energy Hub.

The panel includes some very new and long-term residents of Ipswich, people whose family members worked at Swanbank, through to energy and sustainability experts. Young people were represented by four students from Ripley Valley State Secondary College.

  • Community response to Reimagine Swanbank

Earlier this year we invited people to share their ideas for how the Swanbank Power Station site could be reimagined.

The Reimagine Swanbank website featured a range of feedback tools, including a function to 'pin drop' ideas onto a map and complete a 5 minute survey. Through these tools we received 75 contributions.

Our information displays at local markets and the Ipswich Show attracted more than 450 contributions and generated lots of ideas that were passed on to the Community Co-design Panel.

  • Plans for a big battery are powering ahead!

CleanCo's plan to install a 250MW/500MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on the site of the old Swanbank B power station are powering along.

It is anticipated that Swanbank's BESS will be one of Queensland's largest battery storage projects when complete.

CleanCo has submitted a Development Application to Ipswich City Council to install a BESS and negotiations with suppliers are underway.

Our aim is for the BESS to be switched on by mid-2025.
  • Latest with ash dam rehabilitation

CleanCo is continuing to progress environmental rehabilitation of the ash dam at Swanbank, a legacy of the coal-fired power station that operated there from the 1960s until around 2010.

Aurecon has been engaged to review a 2019 rehabilitation study of the site and design the final rehabilitation plans.

It is expected the rehabilitation design proposal will be submitted to the CleanCo Board late in 2023.
