  • Swanbank's big battery gets Council approval

CleanCo's plans to install a big battery at Swanbank have achieved another milestone, with the Ipswich City Council approving the development application.

The 250MW/500MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be located on the site of the old Swanbank B power station.

With a two-hour storage capacity, it is anticipated that Swanbank's BESS will be one of Queensland's largest battery projects when complete.

The BESS is expected to come into service in mid-2025.

  • Future energy options at Swanbank

CleanCo is transforming the Swanbank power station site into a clean energy hub that will deliver jobs and economic opportunities.

As well as the existing gas-fired power station and the new big battery, CleanCo is considering what other clean and low emission generation technologies could be located at Swanbank.

CleanCo has evaluated the suitability of a wide range of technology types to inform an EOI process. It is expected that the EOI will be released via QTenders site in September.

  • Site remediation update

CleanCo continues to investigate options for remediating parts of the Swanbank site and the legacy left from coal-fired power station operations.

Design work is underway for the rehabilitation of the ash dam, including consideration for a final land use of open green space.

The contaminated land investigations across the A and B sites are now complete. Preparation for remediation works is underway to enable energy development activities on the site from 2024.

  • Happy 50th birthday Swanbank

Our Swanbank team recently celebrated 50 years of power generation at the Ipswich site.

The original coal-fired power stations A and B were commissioned in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Southern Electric Authority of Queensland operated the site at the time.

CleanCo hosted current and former workers, along with local representatives and community leaders, to celebrate the 50-year milestone.
