Project Update - March 2024

4 March 2024

  • Construction of battery underway

In February CleanCo welcomed to our Swanbank site the Queensland Premier Steven Miles, Deputy Premier Cameron Dick, Energy Minister Mick de Brenni and Member for Bundamba Lance McCallum to celebrate the start of construction of the Swanbank battery.

CleanCo is partnering with Tesla and Yurika to deliver the $330M battery as part of the site's transition to becoming a Clean Energy Hub. The 250MW/500MWh battery will be constructed on the site of the former Swanbank B coal-fired power station.

  • Getting Swanbank ready for the battery

As a result of more than 50 years of coal-fired generation on the Swanbank site, CleanCo is conducting some land remediation work to prepare the site for a battery to be constructed.

DECC Environmental Pty Ltd has been engaged to complete this work.

The 250MW/500MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be located on the site of the old Swanbank B power station.

DECC has mitigation measures in place, including water spraying trucks to manage and control any risk of airborne dust/particles.
  • Inviting applications for new CRG

Expressions of Interest are now open for a new Community Reference Group (CRG) CleanCo is establishing for our Swanbank Clean Energy Hub.

The CRG will provide a forum for CleanCo to engage with the Ipswich community, especially people who live close to our Swanbank site. CleanCo is committed to giving the community a voice in how the site evolves in the coming years.

CRG members will receive a $50 voucher for each meeting they attend. EOIs to join close 15 April. Visit the website for more info.

  • Cooling water dam release

If you have travelled near our Swanbank site recently, you may have noticed the level of the cooling water dam has reduced slightly.

As part of recommendations from a 20-year Dam Safety Review and Comprehensive Risk Assessment, CleanCo is conducting maintenance work at the dam.

Approximately 239ML of water was released under controlled conditions late in 2023 to enable our team to access parts of the dam for further inspections.
