Project update - November 2023

16 November 2023

  • Ipswich community positive about draft masterplan

CleanCo's draft masterplan for the Swanbank Clean Energy Hub has received strong support from the Ipswich community, with the general sentiment being "sounds like this would be a great thing for the city and community".

The draft masterplan was developed by a Community Co-design Panel, made up of 30 Ipswich residents.

Since the plan was developed, the project team has presented at local community group meetings, events and given updates to key stakeholders. Thanks to those who provided input!

  • Energy EOI draws solid response

The energy sector has shown strong interest in supplying net zero generation and storage options at Swanbank, with CleanCo's EOI to the market attracting 53 unique and assessable options.

CleanCo is transforming the site into a clean energy hub that will deliver jobs and economic opportunities.

Recently we held an EOI for the energy market to submit proposals for generation and storage options. Recommendations for the proponents to progress to an RFP will be made to the CleanCo Board in December.

  • Swanbank E turns 21!

Swanbank E's GT26 turbine, affectionately known as Anja, has turned 21! At the time of completion in 2002, the turbine was the first and largest of its type in the country, with a capacity of 385MW.

Swanbank E remains the only operating power station on the site.

The turbine was christened 'Anja' after the baby daughter of one of the engineers working on site during the construction phase.

To minimise our environmental impact, Swanbank E uses recycled water for the station’s cooling needs.

  • Big battery on track

CleanCo's plans to install a big battery at Swanbank are on track, with contract signing expected to occur in mid-December.

The 250MW/500MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be located on the site of the old Swanbank B power station.

With a two-hour storage capacity, it is anticipated that Swanbank's BESS will be one of Queensland's largest battery projects when complete.

CleanCo aims to start site works in mid-2024, with the BESS to be energised in mid-2025.
  • Site remediation update

CleanCo continues to investigate options for remediating parts of the Swanbank site.

A number of studies are underway for site remediation and rehabilitation, including the ash dam. The project team has concluded that the initial land use design basis will be for an ‘open green space with no public access’. A team of specialists is currently working on the preliminary design.

Remediation works of the sites previously occupied by the coal-fired A and B power stations will begin later this month.
